I recently came upon a campaign that was started by Zellers employees that were asking Target Canada for fair wages and fair consideration for their years tenure with Zellers and HBC.
At first I was appauled, but later on I considered that if you lived in a rural area, and big bag US retailer Target came to your town to take over your local Zellers, I would also want to fight for fair consideration.
Then I realized that try as they might, this is NOT going to happen. Target, being an American minded retailer is merely going to consider it, but in the end, if the choice is between employee “A” who you have to honor 15 years of service, 4 weeks vacation, and benefits versus employee “B” who you have to honor no years of service, 2 weeks vacation, and basic benefits coverage, you would obviously choose employee “B”.
I also considered that employee “A” might come with some years of experience, but really, how hard is it going to be to run a Target store, or worse, work the changerooms? I’m not demeaning anyone, but I like to stay in the Real. Retail Reality. Target is coming in with Walmart in their crosshairs, and a couple of other retailers in their warpath. They are not here to make nice-nice and warm fuzzy. Don’t get me wrong, they will be a part of the community, and charities, but in the end, it is a Business.
I DO wish those employees well, and it would make for a feel good story, but I fear that they are going up against a Goliath that they will not win this round.
So goes the tumultuous world of retail!
